Way back when the internet was still young, there was a little custom robot mascot named “Blueberry Bot“. He had been used all over the place. He appeared in stock images, apps, and sometimes the face of a business or two.
But now, in 2022, he’s needed a visual and technical update. Compare the difference at the bottom of this page.
Times change, and what was cool in 2011 is now just nostalgia. So we’ve changed his name to “Retrobot” since he was adapted to capture that retro look of the previous decades. For instance, here he is looking like an old fridge from the 1950’s!
There are now 15 variations of the robot, some of which include that original look.

This was a fairly large project. I knew when I started it I wanted to do multiple versions. Since he has a simple form, creating different skins in Substance Painter would be a lot of fun. Since I, my wife, and children, are fans of Fallout 4, I generally stuck to the 50’s era. I find myself especially inspired by the robots of Fallout 4, such as the Protectron. Hence, you can find a number of retro-space-age designs in this new little guy’s look.

Unity 3d Asset, in the Making
Presently, he is being crafted into an app-compatible game character. This is so that he can be used in various 3d applications, some practical applications of which might be AR, VR, online teaching, and of course games. The game asset version allows him to display icons or logos on his chest and head plates.

Original VS New Retrobot: before 2011 and after 2022.
In the old version, the detail was contained in Subsurface division and colored geometry. Now he is properly texture wrapped with 4096px maps. He is also completely animated. Here is a simple comparison between the old and new version:
